THE work of photographer Phil Cornelius, pastel artist Keith Blessed and candle-maker Chris Jones are brought together in a new exhibition at the Inspired by… gallery, Danby.

Favouring black and white as he enjoys the power of its simplicity and the drama it creates, Phil’s photographs capture the atmosphere of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Coast.

Phil, who lives in Kirkbymoorside, will also be exhibiting his poems as part of the Lingering Presence exhibition.

He said: “I live on the edge of the North York Moors and although I have been fortunate enough to stand on all seven continents, I still regard my local work as the most important.

“The light and drama of the moors and Yorkshire coast never ceases to amaze me. Walking alone at dawn or dusk, there is an overwhelming sense of history that I find totally fascinating.”

Pastel artist Keith Blessed was born in Doncaster and worked in hospital pathology labs and the pharmaceutical industry before taking early retirement in 2001, when he moved to Whitby.

Passionate about promoting the use and understanding of painting with pastels, his sources of inspiration are the seascapes and landscapes of the North East coast and moors, in particular their ever-changing moods and atmosphere.

He portrays dramatic sunrises, sunsets and stormy skies in equal measure, showing the contrasting light and shadow in vibrant detail.

Working from Hutton-le-Hole’s craft workshops, Chris Jones from Moorwax Candlemakers aims to make candlemaking into an art form.

Using the best quality wax and wicks, he makes long-lasting, high-quality candles for indoors and outdoors.

He is often told that his candles are “too nice to burn” but he feels they come to life when lit, turning into a piece of “living art”.

People visiting the gallery on October 18 between 12 and 3pm will get an opportunity to meet the artists and there will be music by harpist Sarah Dean.

The Inspired by… gallery is at The Moors National Park Centre, Danby, is open daily from 10am to 5pm during October and from 10.30am to 4pm in November. Information on forthcoming exhibitions can be found at northyorkmoors.org.uk/events
