EAST Yorkshire & Hull Open Studios is a diverse showcase of the region’s best talent in the visual arts, and takes place this weekend and next.

Around 60 artists and galleries will open their doors to visitors, offering insight into their working practices, a varied and impressive range of original art for sale or commission, and even a spot of tea and cake.

Local art and craft can be enjoyed in the environment in which it is made, and curiosity is encouraged.

Now in its third year, Open Studios has been organised and promoted by a team consisting of textile artist and curator Corinne Young and her daughter Rebecca, a writer and arts organiser.

Corinne Young will also be opening her own home studio in Kilham, near Driffield. She will be joined by mixed media artist Shirley Vauvelle, who makes quirky sculptures and wall hangings with earthenware, driftwood and recycled finds.

“I moved to the Yorkshire Wolds seven years ago, attracted by the beauty and serenity of the area," Corinne said.

"Since moving here I have worked in the visual arts as an artist and curator. I am delighted to be involved in the organisation of East Yorkshire & Hull Open Studios, helping to promote the work of the talented artists of the region.

“My own work is inspired by the natural world. I specialise in machine embroidery, and see everything I make as if it were a canvas to be embellished.”

Corinne said as in previous years the event was deliberately non-selective and inclusive.

"This allows all kinds of artists within the East Yorkshire area to participate and display work in traditional painting, print, photography, sculpture, ceramics, glass, textiles, precious metals and more," she added.

"Open Studios is a fun, friendly experience, and an excellent opportunity to explore the beautiful region that continues to inspire its artists and makers.

An East Yorkshire & Hull Open Studios brochure has been produced to make the visitor's experience easier and more enjoyable. The brochure features eye-catching artwork in a variety of media as well as a general area map and clear directions to each studio, and is available from art galleries and tourist outlets within the area.
