OPERA, cocktails and a family sleepover in one of the world’s oldest museums – it must be Museums at Night.

As part of the annual weekend event, both the Rotunda Museum and Scarborough Art Gallery are holding special events on Friday, May 16.

At the Rotunda, there is a free family event – Sleepover at The Rotunda. Families are asked to bring their own sleeping bags and snacks and join in the fun from 7pm.

Breakfast will be provided the following morning. Places on the sleepover, which are suitable for seven to 11-year-olds, who must be accompanied by an adult, are limited and can be booked by phoning 01723 353665.

Meanwhile, at Scarborough Art Gallery, culture vultures can enjoy opera and cocktails. The opera is free, sadly, the cocktails are not. The opera comes courtesy of singer Nathan Jenkins, with accompaniment from pianist Susan Hartley.

Nathan started performing in musical theatre shows when he was at school. He and his family then moved to Dubai where he started having lessons with South African soprano Karen Bradfield, who inspired him to pursue a career in classical music and opera.

After returning to the UK, he had singing lessons with Susan Hartley gaining a place at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he studies with David Maxwell Anderson. He has recently performed at his first opera at the RNCM, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore.

Halifax-born Susan studied piano with Keith Swallow at the Huddersfield School of Music and then got a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music to study piano, clarinet and voice. She performed regularly on the South Bank and at Wigmore Hall, as well as touring Europe and America with Paul Steinitz, culminating in a concert at the Carnegie Hall, New York. Susan was director of music at Scarborough’s Bramcote School from 1994 to 2011. In 2012, she opened the Scarborough Academy of Music, where she is the principal.

She has recently been accepted as an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Cocktails and soft drinks will be served from 7pm, with opera from 7.45pm. Places are limited and bookable from the art gallery on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information visit scarboroughmuseumstrust.org.uk
