WITH just weeks to go before Scarborough’s pre-Easter production of Jesus Christ Superstar, the show’s director says audiences are in for something special.

Duncan Lewis is directing what is believed to be the first-ever staged production of the show, in Scarborough, from April 10 to 16, at the town’s YMCA theatre, as a rock opera.

He said that more everyone involved is feeling they are part of something special.

“The show is complicated, both musically and technically, but there is a real sense that we are working on something that is really special,” said Duncan.

“Our contemporary, rock opera version of the show has certainly caught the imagination of the predominantly young cast. Because we believe that this is the first time the show has been staged in Scarborough, there is a palpable feeling that the cast, band, technical crew and front-of-house staff are part of something that is unique.

“The significance for some that we are staging the show the week before Easter weekend gives the production heightened interest.”

This all-local, amateur production will use the traditional Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber score but shun the usual backdrop of Ancient Rome and centre instead around the music industry with Jesus, a rock star, fast gaining icon status. Duncan is keen that this will be a real community production; meeting the aims of the YMCA in providing opportunities for people from across the borough of Scarborough. Open auditions were held in January and a group of 22 local performers were cast, including Damon Hotchin, from the Stephen Joseph Theatre Outreach adult acting group, taking on the demanding role of Jesus.

The production will feature a seven-strong band and three backing singers, made up from music students and staff from Scarborough’s Yorkshire Coast College Westwood Campus. Some cast members have been drawn from local schools, Scarborough Sixth Form College and York College, and the set and costume designers work part time at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. Existing YMCA volunteers are also involved in costume, technical and front-of-house roles.

Jesus Christ Superstar runs at the YMCA Theatre, St Thomas Street, Scarborough, from April 10 to 16 inclusive, with performances at 7.30pm on all days except Sunday, April 13, when there will be a 2pm matinee. Tickets are £10 for adults, £8.50 for concessions and £32 for a family ticket for two adults and two children, available from the box office on 01723 506750.
