THE life of one of Scarborough’s most famous and unconventional residents is the subject of the next lunchtime talk at Scarborough Art Gallery.

Freelance curator and Sitwell Society member Karen Snowden will discuss the life of Sir George Sitwell, twice Scarborough’s MP in the late 19th century, whose exploits included the sensational unmasking of a fake medium and refusing to pay his wife Ida’s debts, resulting in a three-month jail sentence for her.

Sir George and Lady Ida were the parents of the three famous Sitwell siblings, Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell, all writers, and the family spent its summers in Woodend, next to the Art Gallery.

Snowden said: “This talk will explore Sir George’s life and times, and the sometimes off-the-wall thinking that earns him a place in the list of Victorian eccentrics.”

Sir George Sitwell: a Victorian eccentric will start at 12.30pm on Friday, March 28.

Entry to the talk is £3, which includes the entry fee to both Scarborough Art Gallery and the Rotunda Museum for a year. Places are limited, so booking is recommended. To book, or for further information, phone 01723 374753.
