THE major acts for next year’s three-day Coastival arts festival in Scarborough have been unveiled.

British acid jazz band the Brand New Heavies will headline at the Spa Grand Hall on Friday, February 14, 2014, as a centrepiece to the festival.

Top-name jazz will be provided for a Scarborough Jazz Day at the Spa Grand Hall on Saturday, February 15. Kate Peters and the Heavy Horns will take the afternoon session, 2.30pm-5pm, before Coastival favourite Clare Teal and the Community Band take to the stage at 8pm.

Coastival promises something completely different on Sunday, February 16 with the Musicport ‘Lock in Dance Show’ – a mix of folk and hip-hop, set in a traditional English pub and featuring the Demon Barbers – at the Spa Grand Hall.

The Brand New Heavies are described as “a British music institution whose unique mix of jazz, funk and soul has lit up the dance scene for well over two decades”.

The band began in the 1980s and has had a string of successful albums and singles ever since. They will be supported by Nubiyan Twist, a 10-piece outfit that “fuses elements of Brazilian, West African and Caribbean music with sound system culture and jazz-inspired improvisation”.

Coastival 2014 will also feature Orpheus the Mariner, a performance on February 14 and 15 featuring giant puppets and a record attempt for the largest puppet in the world. It is being put together by Lee Threadgold and Dawn Dyson-Threadgold of Animated Objects Theatre Company.

Organisers Create are pleased with the music line-up.

“Coastival is gaining a great reputation for bringing high quality, diverse performers to the Yorkshire coast and attracting audiences from across the country to enjoy it,” said director, Wendy Holroyd.

“Our programme for 2014 takes that a step further by blending the Brand New Heavies and Nubiyan Twist with fantastic jazz from Clare Teal and something new and ground-breaking from the Lock-in Dance Show.

“With lots more music, as well as dance, theatre, art, activities for children and, of course, Orpheus, Coastival 2014 is shaping up beautifully.”

The rest of the programme is still being put together but will also include dance, theatre and activities for young people.

Organisers are offering a special ‘early-bird’ ticket offer – £50, a saving of £10 – for any music lovers who want to take in a full weekend of acts. For more information, visit www.coastival.com
