THIS month I have been getting back to basics. Remembering and re-distilling why we started out on our Yorkshire food revolution. And it all began with what Malton and this area always had - superb, natural produce - right on our doorstep.

When visitors and holidaymakers come to Malton to taste the local food and sample the newest restaurants or products, I try to remind them that when I lived in London, the most famous markets there were awash with traders shouting about a a brace of Yorkshire Grouse or a nice fresh Yorkshire crab.

It was then that I realised that the incredible rare breed cattle and pigs sold at the famous Ginger Pig butcher were in fact raised just up the road from Malton.

In short, the best Yorkshire produce was being sent away and enjoyed outside of the county. Our mission became a cause to reverse that trend; to celebrate Yorkshire food in Yorkshire.

And in 10 years look where we’ve come. In Malton alone there are now three new bakeries, two new breweries, a new butcher, a pie shop, a coffee roastery, a gelateria, a macaron maker, a gin and whiskey boutique, a specialist wine shop, a wood fired pizzeria, newly-refurbished hotels, a cookery school, new pubs and a fab new Gin distillery.

There are specialist food markets, street food events, food tours, a growing harvest festival and every May one of the biggest food festivals in the UK.

And don’t just take my word for it. Brass Castle Brewery in Yorkersgate holds the award from the Society of Independent Brewers “Supreme Champion lager”. That’s their Helles Lager, in case you fancy an award-winning tipple. Their Bad Kitty brew (a vanilla porter) has also won at nearly every national beer event going.

Florian Poirot, whose new shop opened in Talbot Yard in October, is world renowned. Florian is a member of the team crowned the UK Pastry champions and he individually won the World Pastry Championship in the Sugar category. Not bad.

Just down the road from Malton are some of the best restaurants going. North Yorkshire’s Michelin Star establishments include the Pipe and Glass Inn, The Star Inn and The Black Swan at Oldtead (run by the brilliant Tommy Banks), which was recently named in a Tripadvisor poll as the best restaurant in the world. Yup, that’s the world. Beating Heston Blumenthall, Gordon Ramsay and famous restaurants in New York, Australia, Peru and elsewhere across planet earth.

This little part of Yorkshire has finally been given the international recognition it deserves.

And what Tommy Banks knows and uses in his world-beating restaurant is what we in Malton have also been making use of - the local produce; fruit and veg, baking, cheese, beer, the most sensational rare breed cattle and pigs, Yorkshire beef, game, seafood and much more.

With award-winning chefs and producers making their home in Malton and with international awards popping up, the country and indeed the whole world is now watching this new centre of global culinary excellence.

Florian Poirot started his Malton story with a stall on Malton Community Interest Company’s monthly food market.

Why not come and see if there is a star of the future appearing when the market returns on Saturday, November 11.
