A NEW monthly artisan food market will open in Helmsley Town Hall on Friday.

Helmsley Indoor Market will be open from 9am to 2pm, and then on the third Friday of every month.

Steve Skelton, co-organiser of the market, said that one of its aims is to support local artisan food start-up businesses. “Some of our stallholders have already built up their own enthusiastic following,” he said, “and we want our market to help other new and micro-producers to do the same.”

Featuring local growers and food makers, the market will offer organic vegetables, free-range and grass-fed meat, and Yorkshire dry-cured bacon, as well as locally made charcuterie. Other stalls will include organic fruit and jams, handmade chocolates and artisan bread.

Erica Rose, fellow co-organiser of the new market, said: “Some of our stallholders specialise in crafting their products using local traditional and sometimes ancient techniques, while others are offering something unusual or innovative, such as vegetarian and vegan specialities, gluten-free baking and creative patisseries and desserts.”
