Malton’s former town hall will be brought back to life as a pop-up restaurant by Chateau Marmot, during the Food Lovers Festival next month.

The main event, “Flat Caps, Tartan and Turbans”, will take place on Saturday, May 24, when Incredible Spice Men, Cyrus Todiwala and Tony Singh, will host a five-course evening of local food, matched wines and live music.

All the food will be prepared using Malton-sourced produce, most of which will be available to buy at the festival.

The Incredible Spice Men have stipulated a dress code for the evening of flat caps, tartan and turbans or black tie and cocktail dresses.

The menu for the evening is a collaboration between the Incredible Spice Men and the Chateau Marmot team, which includes chef Sam Hodges, currently a head chef at Soho House, with a CV that includes the acclaimed St John Restaurant, in London.

Other opportunities to eat in the historic surroundings of the town hall, include sittings throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, and Friday evening. Friday night’s menu will be a five-course tasting menu from chef Sam Hodges, alongside live music entertainment, while Saturday’s day menu will offer sharing boards, filled with the best of the festival’s produce.

Sunday will be “Lunch at The Chateau”, a four-course Sunday lunch with a difference, and will also feature a talk from acclaimed Yorkshire author and Independent and Telegraph nature journalist Rob Cowen.

All food will be prepared using Malton-sourced produce and each course will be accompanied by wines selected by internationally-acclaimed wine critic and former Decanter editor Rosalind Cooper. Started in 2012 by husband and wife team Theo Cooper and Danielle Treanor, Chateau Marmot has since toured the UK and beyond creating fine dining experiences.

They work with chefs from wellknown restaurants to create unique temporary dining experiences in spaces ranging from a Victorian schoolhouse in York to a tea house in Victoria, Australia.

Now in its sixth year, the Malton Food Lovers Festival attracts more than 20,000 people to Malton and includes a food market of more than 160 of Yorkshire’s best artisan producers, retailers and restaurateurs.

It features two days of demonstrations, cookery lessons, tutored tastings, talks, family entertainment, music and a new festival bar.

Access to the festival is free, however chef demonstrations, cookery lessons in Malton Cookery School and some other events are ticketed.
