I think there is probably a national day or week for just about anything. For all I know, today could be national paint your bicycle clip day, or the start of UK feather duster awareness week.

What I do know, and I haven’t made this up, is that British Pie Week starts on Monday. Pie week is not only worthy of mention, it is worthy of celebration too.

With this in mind I have come up with some good vino, to complement some popular choices of savoury pie.

As a rule, choose wines that have some acidity; this will allow them to cut through the greasiness of the pastry and refresh your palate.

My own favourite pie filling is chicken and mushroom. For an obvious contender as a wine pairing, go for a chardonnay. Perhaps one with some toasty oak complexity?

I really like Tesco Finest Limoux Chardonnay 2011, which is currently on offer at the bargain price of £6.49. This is a classy, white Burgundy-esque example of the grape from the Languedoc, in the south of France.

Smoky, mineral, crisp and balanced, it suggests flavours of citrus, peach and pineapple.

If it is pork pie on the menu then think Beaujolais, the two go together like tea and crumpets.

Conveniently, the new 2012 vintage of Louis Jadot’s “Combe aux Jacques”, the UK’s best-selling Beaujolais Villages, should now be on the supermarket shelves. Soft but fresh and juicy, it touts just under-ripe red summer fruit flavours, finishing on a mineral note.

Steak and kidney wouldn’t be my first choice of pie but if it’s your favourite, choose a Spanish wine made from the tempranillo grape as accompaniment.

Torres Celeste Crianza 2010, from the Ribera del Duero wine region, is rich and well balanced. Quite structured, it shows black cherry and raspberry flavours, with vanilla, dark chocolate, mineral notes and some toasty oak.
