MIKE TIPPING tries three full-bodied reds where the fruit is turned up a notch.

These reds will all, “get big on you”, like a Mitchell Johnson short ball. But because cricketing analogies are wasted on many and since only one of this trio is Australian, you should perhaps forget that.

So put another way, because I recommended a trio of lighter reds last week, by way of contrast, here are three that are more full-bodied.

The fruit is turned up a notch on these wines too, if you like that sort of thing. But only a notch, I don’t mean that those fruity flavours are overpowering in any way or out of balance.

Les Jamelles Reserve Mourvèdre 2012, is not as good as the brilliant 2011 vintage, but it is worth grabbing a bottle at its £6.25 offer price, at The Cooperative until Tuesday.

From the sunny south of France, it has dense flavours of black cherries and plums with dark chocolate, sweet vanilla and some spice also.

For an Aussie take on the classic Bordeaux blend, try Rolf Binder Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2011, from the Barossa Valley.

This is a rich and well-balanced wine, with long flavours of ripe blackcurrant and plum. It is quite spicy, with notes of mint and dark chocolate too and some supple tannins. It will work well with roast beef or lamb.

Chilean outfit Errazuriz produce a premium wine called The Blend every year, with the component grape varieties, in the cuvée, differing from vintage to vintage.

Errazuriz The Blend 2009 is made with mourvèdre, syrah, petit verdot and grenache, from vineyards in the Aconcagua Valley and created by winemaker Francisco Baettig.

Laden with concentrated, juicy fruit flavours of blueberry, blackcurrant and black cherry and held together by some supple tannins, it is judiciously oaked. Pair this one with a nice juicy steak.
