Having come across General Fiasco, a dynamic and entertaining Northern Irish three-piece, on tours with both Fighting With Wire and One Night Only in the last couple of months, I decided it was only right to find out a little bit more about a band that are set to make a huge impact in the UK over the next year or so.

Having already been signed up for the aforementioned tours, having some very catchy tunes and building a pretty good following, General Fiasco will be playing the BBC Electric Proms later this year. I met up with Owen, Enda and Leaky before their set on the Hull University leg of the One Night Only tour to find out a little more about them as a band.

So then guys, can you give us a history of the band, who you are and where you have come from?

Owen: We come from pretty much in the middle of Derry and Belfast, it’s not actually on the map where we come from! We are relatively new, we’ve only been going for about a year and a half, but things have only really started picking up speed in the last six months.

You’re touring with One Night Only at the moment in some quite big venues. What has this tour taught you so far?

Enda: I’m not sure really, it’s just been really good fun, I don’t think there is much that we have learned from the tour so far.

You toured with Fighting With Wire before this tour, who appeal to a different taste of music compared to the One Night Only sound. How have you been accepted by the different sets of fans?

Owen: In general I’d say that the One Night Only fans are younger and don’t get to go to as many gigs so they’re out to really enjoy themselves. With the Fighting With Wire crowds, they were made up more of seasoned gig-goers who take a bit more to impress.

You’re in sunny Hull tonight, but what has been the best show on the tour so far and why?

Leaky: The ones at the start of the tour were a little bit shaky and a bit weird because we were sort of finding our feet. But since then they have all been really good.

Owen: Yeah, I think that’s true, and to be honest the last few nights have been great.

From doing the tours, your music has got some well deserved exposure, you’re now getting more than 2,000 plays a day on your Myspace. Have you started noticing people singing along to any of your songs in shows?

Enda: Yeah, you don’t see a lot, but you do see quite a few people singing along to a couple of the songs, and also it just good if people have heard of us before we play the show, it just makes it a wee bit easier. The reaction has been really good to our sets, though.

Leaky: It’s really nice to walk out on to the stage now and we get a cheer and a scream.

General Fiasco have come out of a Northern Irish music scene that is really thriving at the moment. Are there any bands you would recommend people to listen to?

Leaky, Enda and Owen: Parana Kings, Two Door Cinema Club, Treading By Night, And So I Watch You From Afar, Fighting With Wire, LaFaro. There are millions! Well, not millions, but there are at least 10.

Finally, what have you got coming up, and why should people check out General Fiasco?

Owen: We’re releasing our single Rebel Gets By on November 10, and it has just started getting quite a lot of airplay on the BBC music channels, including Radio 1. I think we can offer good songs, we’re rocky, but not too rocky, and poppy but not too poppy! Check us out on Myspace at www.myspace.com/GeneralFiasco.
