PATHS across the North York Moors have been closed to the public after flood waters have wrecked six bridges in the park during the recent spell of bad weather.

Staff have been working round-the-clock to repair the routes in what should be the busiest season for tourists and local walkers who enjoy the breathtaking countryside.

Six footbridges have been washed away and some areas even suffered a landslide following torrential rain earlier this week.

Emma Daniel, the National Park Authority's Public Rights of Way Officer, said: "It's difficult to say at this stage what the extent of the damage to paths is as reports are still coming in on a fairly regular basis and this is likely to continue with more heavy rain forecast.

"We will do all we can to get the footpaths reopened as soon as possible and would ask that if anyone does spot any damage, to contact the Authority."

The affected paths are:

* The May Beck Trail near Whitby has been closed completely due to the loss of four footbridges.

* The section of footpath that runs off Bridge Holm Lane (south of South House Farm) near Boggle Hole down to Browside Farm is closed due to the loss of a footbridge over Stoupe Beck.

* The footpath from Beck Hole to Thackside Farm is closed because of the loss of the footbridge across West Beck. The adjacent bridleways have also been closed due to the damage caused to the fording point across West Beck too.

* Three footpaths leading to Water Ark Pool in Beck Hole have been closed because of a landslip.

* Part of the footpath from Mallyan Spout to New Wath Scar in Goathland because of damage to the beckside path. The adjacent footpath from New Wath Scar to the road is also closed to prevent access to the beck.

People can report any damage to paths by calling 01439 770657 or by emailing e.daniel@northyorkmoors-npa.gov.uk
