MALTON Rural Council were told on Saturday that the British Transport Commission proposed to close the Malton-Driffield railway freight line because of the losses being incurred in the operation of the branch.
A letter from the commission said that traffic now handled at stations on the line would be dealt with at Malton and Driffield as railheads.
Coun J W Baker, chairman, pointed out that the line did not come within the council's area and it was agreed to take no action.
IT was reported that there were 19 applications for the post of clerk to Malton and Norton Rural Councils and that the joint establishment committee had selected the following short list of candidates who are due to appear for interview today (Friday) - A E F Dear, Weebley.
Hereford; W T May, Carlisle; W C Wells, Stockton-on-Tees; J Marsden, Pickering; G P Warters, Stamford, Lincolnshire; and T Hicks, Old Malton. Mr Hicks is the present deputy clerk to the councils.
The starting salary for the appointment is £990 a year. Malton and district branch of the National and Local Government Officers Association has asked the councils to review the terms of the appointment and to fix a salary "more in keeping with the responsibility involved".
