"Welcome to Pickering" will greet travellers on the four main road approaches to the town, and designs of a suitable sign will shortly be considered by the Highways Committee of the Pickering Urban Council.

At Monday's meeting of the Council, the "Welcome" signs were opposed by Coun.

J.A. Dymock, not because he did not favour either the welcome signs or the idea, but because no pervision has been made in last year's estimates for the cost of the signing approaches. He mentiones a figure of £100.

Moving the rescinding of the minute, Coun. Dymock said he felt the Council was not justified in spending £100 and he was very suprised that the suggestion to do so had come from the chairman of the Finance Committee (Coun. Tom Taylor). It seemed ridiculous that the Council, after adopting estimates for the next 12 months, should then approve the spending of £100 for which no provision had been made in the estimates. The idea in compiling estimates was to cover the coming year's expenditure.
