THIS month’s feature from Malton Camera Club offers seven images from Andrew Shaw. “I use a Samsung GX20 16mb DSLR and have a variety of lenses,” he said.

“The camera is fab to use if a bit weighty, especially with some of the larger lenses on it. I have a macro lens which I use for close-ups and detailed photos. I have recently invested in a set of studio lights, which is an aspect of photography I would like to have more practice at.”

Harris hawk in flight. Taken at a photography day at the bird of prey centre in Helmsley. The day was cool and wet in the morning but cleared up later. I was sat on the grass and the hawk was sent to fly directly overhead. High shutter speed for action shot. ISO400, 63mm, f/6.7, 1/2000 sec.

Gazette & Herald:

Flower. This was taken on a recent trip to Hyde Hall gardens in Essex. Can’t remember what the plant was called. This was taken with my macro lens. ISO400, 55mm, f/8.0, 1/1000 sec.

Baby Ural owl in action. Taken at a photography day at the bird of prey centre in Helmsley. It didn’t really fly as it was too young; it was more of a hop into the trainers’ hands. Due to the movement of the subject a high shutter speed was needed. ISO1600, 50mm, f/6.7, 1/2000 sec.

Red Arrows flyby. Taken at the Armed Forces day in Scarborough in 2013. I was on the bank overlooking the beach and bay for this shot. ISO100, 100mm, f/9.5, 1/350 sec.

Gazette & Herald:

Tree Nymph butterfly. Taken on a recent trip to Essex. I visited a butterfly and bird sanctuary where I took this picture in the tropical butterfly house. The subject was stationary so I was able to use a slower shutter speed and allow more natural light for the photo. ISO800, 55mm, f/8.0, 1/45 sec.
