THERE are many types of sports and we are lucky in having such a variety available either on our doorstep, or within easy reach. Sport is often a challenge to photograph, especially when it is fast paced, but when it works, you get a great deal of satisfaction.

This month’s spread of photographs supplied by members of Kirkbymoorside Camera Club should inspire you to get out with your camera.

Each photographer has provided a brief outline for their picture.

If you would like to know more about the club, just go to one of their meetings at 7.30pm on the first and third Thursdays of each month at the British Legion Club, in Kirkbymoorside, where you will find a group of friendly people, of all abilities and experience, with a common interest.

More information on the club and its programme can be found on the club’s website kirkbymoorside-camera-club.co.uk, or by requesting an information pack by emailing

Barrie Tuck – One more push

This picture shows Malton and Norton Rugby Club in a loose ruck under the posts and about to score yet another try. A fast-paced game with plenty of close action sporting shots makes it a good venue to capture images like this.

Colin Dilcock – The long pull back

This image shows some of the triathletes in the recent Castle Howard Triathlon. They are in the final kilometre of the 40km cycle ride, after already completing a 1.5km swim, then all they need to do is finish the 10km run. Number 408, Mark Clough, completed the course in two hours 48 minutes and was placed 86th out of the 319 finishers.

David Ireland – Grass track racing

I have been a few times to watch grass track motorbike racing at Riseborough, near Pickering, which is not only interesting to watch, but also good to photograph.

David Richardson – Women’s Freestyle

Taken at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a wonderful occasion, even in comparison to the Olympic Games held in London. This shows competitors in the women’s 50-metre freestyle event won by England’s Fran Hansall. This was one of a number of shots taken, with the intention of trying to show the quality of competition at this high level.

Harry Kingman – Triathlete

This image shows Hannah Drewett competing in the recent Half Ironman competition at Castle Howard. She is just entering the final kilometre. At this stage she had already swam 1.9km, cycled 90km and run the best part of 20km. She was the first woman home with an overall time of 4:49:38, less than 30 minutes behind the first man. These are truly elite athletes but you’ve got to admire the spirit and courage of those who compete purely for their own satisfaction, the last one home of the 125 entrants came in in just over eight hours.

Julie Cowdy – Angling

My granddaughter’s first attempt at fishing brought back happy childhood memories for her grandfather, who was keen to demonstrate how to cast the line.

Kelsey Williamson – Showing off for the Camera

This photo is of 16-year-old local lad Dan Peace, current winner of the first four rounds of the British youth trials championship series. The image recently won me a certificate of merit at the Yorkshire Photographic Union annual competition in the Young Photographer Section.

Bob Ordidge – Pheasant shooting in the snow

Some may not think of shooting pheasants as a sport, but this photograph does show how dedicated you need to be when it snows.
