SUNSHINE attracted a crowd of about 5,000 to Rosedale’s 138th annual agricultural show on Saturday.

This year’s presidents were husband and wife, John and Carol Cockerill, two long-standing supporters of the show.

John, who works on the Holt Estate in Rosedale, has been showing poultry for many years, while Carol has been a prominent exhibitor in the home-baking sections.

He has been associated with the show for half a century but this year’s event, he believed was one of the most successful.

However, said Mr Cockerill, like many village shows, it needed to attract younger people to its committee to help in its organisation and ensure its future.

“It’s a great rural show, in a beautiful setting,” said Mr Cockerill. “It seems to get more popular year after year with people coming from all parts of the country to stay here just for the show.”

This year’s new attractions includes classes for highland cattle and an exhibition of alpacas.

A large number of agricultural horses and foals were also exhibited, along with some of Ryedale’s finest livestock in the cattle and sheep sections.

Veteran shire horse breeder, Bob Pearson, of Fylingthorpe, donned a traditional smock, red and white spotted neck-tie and hat, to add to his role as a ploughman showing his grey shire, Noble.

One of North Yorkshire’s leading agricultural horse breeders – he has eight horses – Bob said: “They are always a popular attractions at the rural shows. We take great pride in showing them with all their brasses and rosettes.

“I was brought up in farming with horses because my father would never have a tractor on the land.

“I don’t go on holiday – I spend my time instead going round the agricultural shows with the horses – it’s a smashing way of life and I’m helping to keep alive a real piece of English countryside tradition.”

Stalls and a large craftwork marquee, as well as music provided by the Malton White Star band, made for an outstanding day.

* Two stalwarts of the show’s past, Ron and Joan Graham, were remembered when their daughter, Stephanie Myers, presented special rosettes in their memory, to championship winners.

Mr and Mrs Graham ran the show’s fur and feather sections for many years, and Stephanie has taken over from her mother as the secretary. Her father was a nationally recognised judge of pigeons.

Beer tent drama

A FREAK gust of wind blew down the beer tent at Rosedale show, damaging three parked cars.

Louise Dale, of Norton, described what happened.

She said: “It blew a distance of 150 feet in to the car park somersaulting over five rows of parked cars, causing damage to several vehicles, including smashing the windscreen of a van belonging to The Press (sister paper of the Gazette & Herald). It also injured one woman who I saw holding her head. She was being attended to by a medical team.

It is not believed the woman’s injuries were serious as a spokeswoman for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it had not sent paramedics to the event.

The tent had been allocated a new spot on the from its previous site at the bottom of the valley fields.
