Thornton-le-Dale Show attracts thousands of visitors

Martin Blythe, chairman of the show’s organising committee, said: “Absolutely brilliant day and a brilliant crowd – that’s my verdict.

“We had a damp start, but we knew it was going to turn out well. At 6pm the field was still jam-packed with people, it’s wonderful.

“The show does a lot of good for Thornton Dale. It puts it on the map. A lot of people come along to the show, they think “this is a nice place” and then they come back.

“The countryside always needs to be promoted. There are a lot of people struggling to make a living.”

For vegetable growers, jam makers, pigeon fanciers and cross-stitch aficionados, this was a chance to reveal the results of their labours, perhaps to win a trophy or rosette.

For many, the show was just the best way to keep their children, half way through the school holidays, occupied for a whole day.

Anna Duck, a midwife living in Thornton-le-Dale, brought along her newborn baby, Ruby, on one of her first outings. Anna said: “The show has been really good. I loved the gymnastics – it was humorous and the kids were mesmerised. We’ve been coming for years.

“The show is very important for Thornton-le-Dale. We don’t have a carnival now so this keeps it going.”

Dorothy Gilbertson, who is retired, took the chance to relax in a comfy seat by the main ring, keeping her eye on the action.

She said: “The horse displays were very good and the fancy dress is fantastic. Everyone did their bit and it is a shame they couldn’t all get the prize.

“It is very important that we support these traditional shows.”

The day started off with grey skies but by 3pm, the sun was out.

Brian Gleeson was a policeman on the North York Moors for many years, and on his retirement, decided to start trading in specialist Scottish liqueurs.

He said he thought the Thornton-le-Dale Show has even more atmosphere than the Ryedale Show.

He said: “Today has been very good indeed. People appreciate the fact that they can buy things at the Thornton-le-Dale Show as presents for people, knowing that they won’t find the same thing in the supermarket.

“I went to the Ryedale Show and there weren’t as many people buying and tasting the liqueurs.”

Quality counts

“Great quality, but more quantity needed.”

That was the verdict of many of the livestock judges at Thornton-le-Dale Show this year.

Judges in the sheep, hunter horse and pig classes all agreed that they had seen some excellent animals this year, but that they wished more people would enter.

Elizabeth Morley, of Boston Spa, drove up for the day to judge the hunter horse class.

She comes from a horse racing family and has been hunting and eventing all her life.

She said: “There weren’t hundreds of horses to judge this year, but they were nice quality, and the ponies were good quality too. The hunter breed mare this year was lovely.

“Generally this is a very good area for hunter breeding and ponies. I suspect a few we saw today were at the Yorkshire Show, so it is good that they show support for the local shows.”

Elizabeth said that she had high standards when it came to horses.

“I breed thoroughbreds so I do like to see quality. They’ve got to be elegant and well-proportioned, and generally speaking they’ve got to have a naturally good movement if they are going to win.

“The only thing I don’t like to see is young horses that are too fat.

“It is not good for them to be carrying too much weight. They get problems in later life.”

Paul Moorhouse, a judge and member of the Jacob Sheep Society, said: “I saw one particularly good sheep.

“It had good colour, and it was just a lovely, square, well puttogether sheep.”

Paul said that there were very few problems with in-breeding causing defects in the sheep, compared to when he started sheep farming in 1972.

He said that because the overall standard of the stock was rising, more people ought to have a go at entering the country shows.

He said: “It’s been a good show, certainly, but in some of the classes there were only five, or three, or even one sheep.

“We could do with a few more people entering to step up the competition.”
