GARDENERS are being offered the chance to start composting at home at a bargain price.

North Yorkshire County Council have teamed up with getcomposting.com to provide an exclusive offer on home compost bins.

Compost bins now cost just £8 and £10 and with the “buy one get one half price” offer on these already discounted bins they can be bought for as little as £6 each, plus £5.99 delivery.

County Councillor Andrew Lee, Executive Member for Waste Management, said: “If you have been thinking about buying a compost bin, now is the time, and it’s even better if you have a friend, neighbour or relative to share this deal with.

“You may be surprised at how much of your waste can be composted at home. Fruit and vegetable peelings, crushed eggshells, tea bags, coffee grounds, paper, card and garden waste are all compostable.”

More than 60 per cent of the contents of the average rubbish bin is biodegradable and more than 30 per cent can be turned into peat-free compost. Home composting is a cheaper alternative to chargeable garden waste collections and has the added benefit of producing something for free.

Two sizes of compost bin are available: the 220-litre Compost Converter at £8 and the 330-litre Compost Converter at £10 or less using the “buy one get one half price” offer. To order a bin, call 0844 571 4444 or visit www.getcomposting.com. A delivery charge of £5.99 applies.

The North Yorkshire Rotters home composting volunteers will be attending events in spring to provide information and advice on how to start composting and how to make the most of compost bins. The events they will attend include:
