SNAINTON Young Farmers group have held a 24-hour plough-a-thon in aid of charity.

The mammoth undertaking started at midday on Saturday and finished Sunday, when there was also a competitive ploughing match. The event had the most entrants the group has ever recorded, with 75 entries ranging from young to old, with modern tractors to vintage tractors.

Ian Welburn, from the group, said: "It went really well and was a great success. The weather was on our side this year and stayed sunny and warm which was brilliant. We sold lots of bacon and sausage sandwiches, lots of cakes and other refreshments which will all go towards the money with the 24-hour plough-a-thon to the charities."

The two charities which the event was raising money for were mountain rescue and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The plough-a-thon itself was completed by all members. The group managed to plough 16 acres over the 24 hours with just a two-furrow plough.

The competitive element had winners in several classes. The winner of the reversible class was Richard Dowson, with Ellie Harrison in second place and Ian Welburn and David Harrison in joint third.

The vintage trailed class was won by Eric Jones, followed by Ray Graham and Ian Myers. Richard Wilson won the vintage mounted class, with Ken Douthwaite in second and Ian Berryman in third.

The conventional class was won by Andrew Pashby, with Pete Scruton in second and Tim Vasey in third. Victory in the classic class went to Pete Gilson, with second going to A Woolas and third to D Wood.
