ON a fantastic sunny autumn day at Wombleton Airfield, Cundalls Auctioneers of Malton, held their final sale of breeding sheep and store lambs with a record entry of more than 6,000 on the catalogue.

There was a large crowd of buyers at all three sale rings with in excess of 200 clients making a purchase, and the prices remained firm in all departments.

2,728 store lambs were sold on the day and topped at £69.50 with an overall average of a respectable £48.31, just £5 down on last year.

The trade in the ram ring was also competitive with Suffolk’s topping at a firm 400 guineas; Continentals at 520 guineas; Blue Faced Leicester’s at 480 guineas and Cheviots at 170 guineas.

Helmsley Young Farmers again collected lambs from local producers and auctioned them off for their chosen charity which this year was Yorkshire Cancer Charity. 22 lambs were kindly donated and sold for £1255.

The Frank Flintoft Memorial Trophy was presented by the Young Farmers for the best Gimmer lambs to Mr PA Teasdale which sold for £90 to Mr R Donaldson.

The judges on the day were Mr Brian Meadley of Skeffling for the Mule Gimmer lambs and Richard Fairburn for the Mule Shearlings.

The Green Farm Health Trophy for the best pen of Mule Gimmer Shearlings 1st Mr B Meadley sold for £143 to FE Ellis & Son of Old Byland 2nd RC Dugmore sold for £130 to T Wren of Low Tranmire 3rd S Barker & Sons sold for £138 to Bentley Bros of Salton The CW Evans Trophy for the best pen of Mule Gimmer Lambs 1st Mr P Broughton sold for £110 to Mr C Collinson of 2nd HD Featherstone sold for £97 to T Collinson of Gilling East 3rd A Dowsland sold for £86 to JD Gospel of Farndale Forward 5212 breeding sheep and store lambs.
