A YOUNG farmer and butcher is presenting his first television film for BBC One’s Countryfile.

Gareth Barlow, who lives near Bulmer, is undertaking a two-part look at the beef industry from both farming and consumer viewpoints.

The second instalment on Sunday, November 2 sees Gareth in Newcastle to appreciate consumer interaction with the beef industry.

‘I’m extremely excited to have been able to use my experience as a farmer, butcher at Castle Howard and abattoir employee to present a view of the beef industry," Gareth said.

"British food and farming is approaching another period of transition and it’s important that consumers and farmers alike, appreciate how the other interacts with beef as an industry and food product. To do so on BBC Countryfile makes the opportunity even more fantastic.

At the end of last year Gareth sold his premium restaurant-supplying lamb business to take a sabbatical, from day-to-day farming.

The 23-year-old decided to combine a love of farming and food production, with his interest for radio and television media to produce content about what people are eating. Gareth produces and presents weekly food and farming audio for BBC Radio York, hosts a weekly food show on Vale Radio and writes on Huffington Post and www.garethbarlow.co.uk.

Gareth said he was currently working on other longer term projects which would hopefully produce some exciting and useful content for various audiences.

"As a strong believer of the huge scope to produce food in cities, I am looking at some projects in urban farming for 2015," he added.
