RYEDALE-based agricultural firm BATA has bought compound animal feed manufacturer Thompsons of York.

BATA, established as a farmers’ cooperative in 1894, has seen substantial growth in its activities over recent years with a range of products available through a network of 10 local country stores. The company also manufactures compound feeds as well as supplying of fuel products to agricultural, domestic and industrial customers.

Charles Brader, chairman of BATA, said: “The purchase of the Thompsons business provides a unique opportunity for the future supply of feeds and other goods and services to farmers and the rural community.”

“These arrangements whereby two established and local organisations have a natural fit will be of long term benefit to BATA members and customers of both businesses”. Steven Clarke, chief executive of BATA, added: “In many regions of the UK a small number of large businesses are becoming increasingly dominant and so we anticipate these new arrangements will be welcomed by the entire agricultural community who do business within the region.”

Thompsons, based in Murton, was established in 1926, and supply a full range of compound animal feeds.

Andrew Richardson, managing director of Thompsons, said: “This innovative business opportunity provided by being part of the BATA business will further ensure growth and the efficient supply and high levels of service of compound feeds along with other products, is maintained in an industry where change is a continuing feature. Two well respected local businesses coming together is very much a forward thinking and positive step.”
