A LEADING expert on Anglo-Saxon archaeology will be giving a lecture on Friday about the history of a farmstead from that era.

Professor Julian Richards, of York University, will talk on Anglo-Saxon Estates on the Wolds:Archaeological fieldwork at Cottam and Cowlam. The talk will be at 7.30pm at St Andrew’s Church, Weaverthorpe.

The sites at Cowlam and Cottam sites tell much about the lives of the Viking invaders in the 9th and 10th centuries who ruled from Yorvik (York) and the local Anglo-Saxon population who they dominated.

The lecture will tell the story of an Anglo-Saxon farmstead associated with a Royal estate based on Driffield that became an independent manor under Viking rule. Tickets cost £5 each, to include refreshments.
