LIZZIE Jennings, from Malton, has taken the first step to achieving her ambition to embrace a career in sheep farming by joining the Wolds sheep farming business Six Valley Lamb as assistant manager.

Despite not coming from a farming background, Lizzie has recently graduated from Bishop Burton College with a 1st class BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Resource Management.

She is a familiar face at Malton Livestock Market, where she has worked over the years on sale days.

And she has also accrued numerous contract shepherding jobs throughout her time at college.

Lizzie also regularly contributed to the College Calendar feature in the Farmers’ Weekly.

“At 23 it is fantastic to be given such a great opportunity in a new business,”

said Lizzie.

“I am really looking forward to the challenge of working with such a new sheep enterprise and being able to be involved in its growth.”

Adam Palmer, partner at Six Valley Lamb, said: “We had the chance to work with Lizzie on numerous occasions throughout her later period at Bishop Burton following a first contact via the Wolds Fresh Start Academy.

“Her achievements and her motivation to go out and gain wider experience in the industry show great work ethic and enthusiasm for a career in sheep farming which will be crucial to the successful growth of our enterprise.”

Thixendale-based Six Valley Lamb is a new business from a joint venture between Mr Palmer and Peter Caley who met during their time at Bishop Burton College in the late 1990s. “It is great to be working with a young person aspiring for a career in farming,” said Peter.

“All too often we hear of young people not wanting to embrace farming as a career. Lizzie will be offered a good opportunity to advance her career given that Six Valley Lamb is in such an early stage of its development.”
