A RYEDALE farm shop is among four North Yorkshire businesses which are celebrating winning regional titles in the fifth annual Countryside Alliance Awards.
Beadlam Grange Farm Shop, at Pockley, near Helmsley, goes forward to the final and will be competing against other regional winners in a bid for a national title.
The Countryside Alliance Awards celebrate the characters, skills, traditions and enterprise of the countryside through the people who work so hard to make it tick.
Head judge Steve Clark said of the Beadlam shop: “With Beadlam supplying all their own beef and sheep to their farm shop, coupled with a dedicated team to proved the very best in customer services, they are worthy winners.
“The farm shop sells a wide range of produce all of which is made on the premises and locally sourced. They have a huge variety of traditional dishes with a local twist – not only local produce. Even their shop was kitted out with locally made furniture – they could not be more local if they tried.”
Also named as a regional winner in the category for village and post office, was Tollerton Post Office and Shop.
Mr Clark said: “Going that extra mile for customers new and old, especially, in the cold snap, showed Tollerton’s worth.
“Over 10 years they have managed to increase turnover from £3k a week to more than £14k by concentrating on local, traceable produce with dedication to customer service, ensuring that the old and the housebound receive their deliveries and are safe and well.”
The winner of the Daily Telegraph Traditional Business Award, was Johnson’s of Thirsk, a butcher’s shop.
“It is part and parcel of traditional life in this market town,” Mr Clark said.
“With a combined staff of nine, all of whom have been with the business for many years and have been trained in-house, their butchery skill is second to none.”
The fourth regional finalist and winner of the Rural Enterprise Award, was Fodder, at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate.
Mr Clark said: “The Yorkshire Agricultural Society has taken support for local farmers an enterprising leap forward by selling 85 per cent Yorkshire produce from this plush shop and café at the Yorkshire showground.”
