A SHOW’S organisers are celebrating another successful event.
But as the committee behind the North Yorkshire County Show tie up the loose ends from the event, held at Otterington Hall, near Northallerton, they have embarked on a search for a new secretary.
Dave Fielding has fulfilled this key role for the last six years, but a change in his work commitments means he is unable to carry on.
Assistant secretary Len Cragg said: “We’re really indebted to Dave for all of his hard work over the years. We’ll be sorry to see him go.
“But now it’s time for someone else to take over the reins of this key position. We are all doing this voluntarily and enjoy doing it very much.”
Mr Cragg said the sunshine had helped boost attendance figures at the show, with gates thought to be well up on last year’s figures.
Jane Kennedy MP, who stepped down from her job as farming minister just days before the show, honoured her commitment to formally open the North Yorkshire event.
“I can’t think of a better way to spend a summer weekend than visiting a country English show,” she told the crowds. Mrs Kennedy, who grew up in County Durham, was accompanied by her parents, who still live near Darlington.
Events at the show included motorcycle stunt riders, a Laurel and Hardy tribute act, the popular Mellin family sheepdog and duck display and the full complement of traditional agricultural show attractions such as showjumping and heavy horses, traction engines, classic cars and motorcycles, classes for cattle, sheep, poultry (the show is the largest summer poultry show in England), rabbits and ferrets, driving classes, horticulture and produce, arts, crafts, photography and children’s classes.
Anyone interested in the vacant position of secretary is asked to contact Mr Cragg on 01609 773577.
In the final event of the day, the tug-of-war, Ingleby Cross Young Farmers’ Club team triumphed, retaining the trophy it won last year. Second was Upper Wharfedale YFC, and third, the team from Tony Hudson Plant Hire, in York.
