East Yorkshire ‘among best for recycling’

RESIDENTS in East Yorkshire recycled more than half of their rubbish last month, new figures have shown.

The recycling rate for the whole region in June was 60 per cent.

A trial scheme which sees fortnightly collections of blue recycling bins and green landfill bins - staged in Beverley, Bridlington, Driffield, Goole, Haltemprice, Market Weighton and Pocklington - saw levels rise to 70 per cent.

Council teams collected 1,872 tonnes of recyclable material, such as glass, paper, plastic and cans, from blue bins last month, compared with 1,292 tonnes in June last year, while 5,260 tonnes of garden and food waste and cardboard was collected from brown composting bins, 19 per cent more than the year before.

Waste in green bins, which goes to landfill, was down by 15 per cent.

Coun Symon Fraser, of East Riding of Yorkshire Council. said: “Our residents are up there among the best in the country when it comes to recycling.”
