LINDSAY Harrison, a veterinary surgeon and event rider from Snainton, has got the 2012 season off to a sparkling start after delivering a highly-ranked performance in the British Eventing Jumping and Style competition which took place at Bishop Burton College.

Jumping and Style (JAS) is an indoor series run by British Eventing in January and February.

Competitors are required to jump a course comprising both cross-country fences and show jumps and are marked on their jumping technique and style. Any jumping faults or time faults incurred are taken into account to give an overall score.

Lindsay, a vet at the Scarborough Cundall and Duffy practice, took a highly-creditable second place in the open section riding her ten-year-old bay gelding, Border Crossing. The fences stood at 1.15m in height and consisted of seven show jumps followed by nine portable cross-country style obstacles.

“The cross-country section included a corner, skinnies and a bounce,”

said Lindsay, who was awarded a training bursary by the Event Horse Owners Association in 2010.

“The turns were quite difficult and most things were on a related distance so it really was quite technical and prevented you from going very fast, which in turn made the time difficult to achieve.”

Lindsay has only been riding Border Crossing for a year but has already forged a strong bond with the talented gelding.

“Border Crossing has an enormous jump which I’ve found really difficult to stay in balance with over a fence so I was extremely pleased to get a good style mark as it’s something I’ve really been working hard on,” she said.

The combination has now qualified for the JAS finals at Addington Manor in Buckinghamshire later this month.

Border Crossing looks an exciting prospect for the forthcoming BE competition series and Lindsay aims to be competing him in his first CCI* mid-way through the season.

Her other horse, Milling Around, a seven-year-old gelding by Mill Law, has successfully contested Burghley Young Event Horse classes and competed at BE100 level. He was being aimed towards the six-year-old championships at Osberton horse trials last year until an injury rendered him out of action for the rest of the season. He has since made a good recovery and is now fit and ready to make a comeback to the sport.
