New faces take on seasoned riders at showjumping competition

THERE were plenty of fresh faces and a few first-time competitors at Friars Hill Stables unaffiliated showjumping competition on Sunday.

Easingwold-based rider Jody Salton got the action underway with a winning performance in the opening class riding the school pony, Nicky.

Jody also finished among the ribbons in the 55cm when taking second place to Isabelle Baldwin and Lottie. The senior 45cm went the way of Rosie Garbutt, who was making her debut appearance at the venue. Rosie was riding the versatile black gelding, Blaze.

Trish Emms notched up a notable double when heading the leaderboard in the 55cm and 65cm riding the talented veteran gelding, Comet.

Doubles were to be the order of the day from then on, as Amy Hayhurst secured back-to-back victories in the 65cm and 75cm height classes with her two rides, Leo and Merlin, respectively.

There was some intense competition in the 85cm class, and after an edge-ofthe- seat jump-off round, less than one second separated the top four riders.

The eventual winner was George Brown riding Penny Richardson’s effervescent black mare, Min. George’s quiet riding style complements this lively mare perfectly and they have forged a strong bond.

The combination continued their run of success when taking the top honours in the 95cm height class.

45cm Seniors: 1 Rosie Garbutt & Blaze, 2 Fran Mason & Marmaduke, 3 Sandra Thurlow & Lulu.

55cm Juniors: 1 Isabelle Baldwin & Lottie, 2 Jody Salton & Nicky, 3 Amy Newman & Morgan, 4 Charlotte Fryday & Comet, 5 Saskia Brookes & Jack.

55cm Seniors: 1 Trish Emms & Comet, 2 Emily Newman & Jimmy, 3 Amber Tock & Henderson, 4 Rosie Howarth & Red.
