A fun way to exercise your horse in winter

AS part of their winter exercise program in preparation for the 2012 season, the horses of Ryedale Point-to- Point Club enjoy an exhilarating gallop along the beach at Redcar.

“Our horses thoroughly enjoy an outing to the beach – it really gives them a vital boost,” said Annabelle Armitage, manager of Ryedale Pointto- Point Club.

“It provides a great way for riders to work their horses during the winter months, particularly when the ground becomes frozen or waterlogged.”

The beaches at Filey and Fraisthorpe are among the popular destinations for local riders but if you are attempting your first-ever beach ride, or if your horse is nervous or spooky, it is advisable to be accompanied by a more experienced horse and rider.

Remember to always confirm the safe times to ride before leaving home so that you don’t get caught out by the tide, and be prepared to encounter strange sights and sounds, including brightly-coloured umbrellas, people playing ball games and excitable dogs running around and barking.

“Many beaches have restrictions on where you can ride but, if unsure, you can check with the local council that your chosen destination is suitable for horses,” said Annabelle, from Gilling, who runs an acupuncture business in Malton.

“If your horse does not like going through water then stick to dry land – where you can still have lots of fun.”

The Ryedale Point-to-Point Club was founded more than 15 years ago and was the first-ever point-to-point racing club to be formed in the North of England. Last year the club enjoyed victories at the Sinnington and Holderness meetings with the talented Sherwoods Folly ridden by amateur jockey, Toby Greenall.

The most successful horse for the club has been Iron Express (Ivan), who proved a cut above the rest when he clinched five victories during the 2007 season, including the Grimthorpe Gold Cup under Oliver Greenall.
