There was further disappointment for point-to-point fans last weekend after the West of Yore Steeplechases, due to take place on Sunday, were cancelled.
The meeting, scheduled to take place at Britain’s newest point-to-point course, Whitcliffe Grange, near Ripon, had been well supported with 120 entries submitted.
The new course had attracted Yorkshire owners and trainers, as well as entries from as far afield as Cheshire and Anglesey. Richard Wells, chairman of the West of Yore Steeplechases, said: “In view of the significant snowfalls in the weeks either side of Christmas, we believe an entry of 120 horses is testimony to the very positive comments we have received about the course.”
The Yorkshire Point-to-Point Club, which should have held its meeting on January 17, has now got a new date of Sunday, February 21. The day starts with pony racing at 10.45am. The first point-to-point race is at 12 noon.
