LOCAL riders had a good day at the Brocklesby Hunt Point-to-Point at Brocklesby Park near Grimsby on Sunday.

In the Clark Weightman club member’s race, William Easterby won on Monsieur Jourdain from the Easterby yard in Malton. This horse is a three-time winner of the prestigious Grimthorpe Gold Cup in Yorkshire, including victory last season. Brocklesby Park is often a successful venue for the Easterby family.

Richard Smith won on the Ian Mason-trained Comedinewithme, making it two wins from two this season.

With 122 entrants for a seven-race card, riders from all over the country entered although there was a strong local presence.

After overnight rain cleared it was a dry day with sunny intervals and win speeds of 22 miles per hour. The going was soft all round the course. The races started at noon with the Flexi Hydraulic Brocklesby Member’s race and went through until the Paul Wiseman Electrical open maiden, the final race at 4pm. Races at the competition are largely three-mile steeplechases and include eighteen fences; one fence being an open ditch which is usually jumped twice.

The racecourse is within Brocklesby Park, set in parkland. Races have been run there since 1958.
