BRIDLEWAYS are a subject close to most horse rider’s hearts, whether you are a happy hacker who just enjoys getting out and about locally or you’re into long distance riding, bridleways matter. What’s more, as the roads get busier, it is increasingly important that horse riders have access to off-road routes.

Ryedale Bridleways Group has been together for 14 years, it brings local riders together to campaign for the maintenance and improvement of bridleways and other rights of way open to horse riders.

The group encourages and supports members in dealing with bridleways issues, comment on proposed changes to the rights of way network, organise route clearances and work with staff at North York Moors National Park and North Yorkshire County Council on improvements and problems.

In recent years the financial pressures on the rights of way services at the National Park and the County Council mean that it can be hard to get improvements to the bridleway network, and even major maintenance tasks have to wait for funding to become available. So it’s even more important for riders to help look after their local bridleways by reporting problems and helping to maintain paths through working parties and fundraising.

It costs £6 to join Ryedale Bridleways Group. For that you get a newsletter and members’ information about local rides and safe trailer/box parking, you can come to our talks and activities too.

Last year they ran an ‘improve your trail riding’ clinic, organised BHS Level 1 Rights of Way training, and had talks on topics ranging from riding abroad to equine first aid.

The group’s annual meeting is on Tuesday, February 24, at 7.30pm, in the meeting room at Helmsley Town Hall. Visit ryedalebridleways.com
