A TRIP to the Welsh pony and cob sales in Wales to look at a young unbroken four-year-old pony has paid off for Maxine Cooper.

Maxine, who was looking for a show pony for her seven-year-old daughter Ellie, came away from the sale as the winning bidder meaning Thistledown Vanilla Orchid now belonged to her. The pair made the journey back to Yorkshire and began training in readiness for what is hoped will be a successful showing career.

Maxine and Ellie spent the winter getting to know her along with taking her to little shows to get used to the ring and atmosphere.

Ellie, who is a pupil at Malton Primary School, dedicates much of her time to her two ponies, Thistledown Vanilla Orchid and Thistledown Jessie James, who she also shows successfully.

Last Saturday, the trio made the journey to the BSPS area 1A North East Counties show at Scorton, near Richmond, for the Pretty Polly lead rein qualifier, which is for home-produced ponies only.

In a strong class, the trio managed a foot-perfect performance, along with good comformation marks from the judge to come out of the ring with a first place.

They have now qualified for their first attempt at a big show, the Royal International Show, at Hickstead showground, in August.

Ellie’s parents Maxine and Neil said: “There were tears of joy to have realised a dream so early on in their careers, we are very proud of them both.”
