RUBY in the Smoke by Phillip Pullman is the first book from the Sally Lockhart mystery quartet, writes Nell Thackray.

Set in the dark heart of Victorian London, this murder mystery classic has a certain curious and heart-warming feel that matches perfectly with the terrifying, but thrilling storyline; a dangerous battle between the good and murderous to find the enchanting red ruby and unravel the unspoken truth behind it.

If you ever fancy an endeavour into Victorian life or a good read of a well-written and exciting book, then this is the one to choose. However, for a relaxing light read, this may be too powerful and thought provoking. Nevertheless, Pullman’s book is definitely a fantastic and enjoyable book for adventurous readers 12 years and older.

We (Eight set one) read Ruby and the Smoke, both as a class and individually and I think it is fair to say that we really took to it and would highly recommend it.
