Students welcome teaching facility

Medical students have welcomed the opening of a new teaching facility at Cross Lane Hospital in Scarborough.

The Cornerhouse building on the site was officially opened by Prof Bill Gillespie, Dean of Hull & York Medical School and will provide students with a seminar room, interview room and resource room with computer access.

Hull & York Medical School (HYMS) funded the refurbishment of the facilities along with Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust, which provides mental health training to the students.

Declaring the building officially open, Prof Gillespie said: "We are delighted that our partners in the NHS have been able to create this exciting facility for HYMS students.

''This is our third intake of students, and with these outstanding facilities, we hope that HYMS goes from strength to strength."

Paul Hyde, general manager at Cross Lane Hospital, said: "This project is about modernisation and working in partnership to provide high quality care for our patients.

''HYMS is a new way of teaching tomorrow's doctors and I'm proud we are at the forefront of delivering their training."

Student Katrina Crawford said: "The teaching facilities at the Cornerhouse will have a positive impact on our learning."

Student Mobeen Ahmed said: "The facilities are a very worthwhile investment for the future of HYMS, and will provide us with a place to meet and discuss our work and keep in contact with both HYMS and NHS colleagues."
