Plea to back In Bloom bid

TRADERS and organisations in Helmsley are being urged to get behind the local campaign to make the market town a winner in this year's Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

Helmsley in Bloom group member Jane Barker said: "Last summer we got joint first place in our class in the summer judging and we feel we can build on that success if we can make a real effort for the spring judging."

The group and volunteer helpers are already making plans to make Helmsley a strong entry this spring.

Bird and bat boxes have been put up in the churchyard of the parish church of All Saints and an Easter garden is to be created in the area by Sunday School children who have already made a bird feeding station and a wild flower garden.

In addition, the group has plans to regenerate the old railway track near The Limes estate and is seeking help from various agencies.

The group had hoped to place planters around the Feversham Monument in the Market Place but Ryedale District Council has advised against the idea because of traffic problems.

However, they will now be put in the parking area in from the Black Swan Hotel, said Mrs Barker.

"We also have other projects on the drawing board to ensure Helmsley proves to be a strong contender in the blooming championships this year," she said.

The group has bought special 'Helmsley in Bloom' luminous work tabbards, litter picking gear and gardening gloves for helpers.

"They will serve three purposes - to publicise our group while we are working, keep us safe, and make a very serious fashion statement."

But more supporters and helpers are needed, said Mrs Barker. Anyone able to help is asked to ring (01439) 771850.
