Lady Lumley's A team seize victory at under-14s rugby tournament

Annual Under-14s Rugby Tournament: Lady Lumley's School hosted the annual Under-14s rugby tournament, sponsored by Malton & Norton Rugby Club.

Lady Lumley's A and B teams joined six other schools in the area in what proved to be a very competitive tournament.

The B team started with a respectable 10-10 draw against Filey School, followed by a 15-10 victory over Scalby.

In their final group game, a 10-10 draw with Graham School ensured they went to the final.

The A team dominated their group with comfortable victories over Flyinghall 15-0, Caedmon 35-0 and Pinder School 20-5, to set up an all Lady Lumley's final.

As expected, the A team ran out worthy winners 25-10, but the B team certainly did not make it easy for them. There were outstanding performances from Sam Stephenson, Josh Beech and Tim Hunt in the B team and Garth Hunt, Elliot Tennent and George Barker in the A team.

Player of the Tournament was Jake Read. Credit goes to Malton & Norton Rugby Club coaches Chris Wilson and Pat Stephenson, who run the coaching sessions.

After 40 minutes had passed, the teams were still locked at 0-0 although each team had made several attempts on goal.

This was more like a tennis match rather than hockey, with the ball going from one end of the pitch to the other throughout.

Extra time had to be played to split the teams and find a winner.

The goal came for Norton School after 10 minutes which was well deserved. Both teams showed excellent sportsmanship and determination.

Emma Meyers scored two goals thanks to two superb assists by Becki Bointon.

The team played well as a whole which showed in the three clean sheets they kept, thanks to good defensive performances from Gemma Nicholson and Chelsea Avison.

The girls missed out on a semi-final spot by four points, but are looking forward to their next competition.
