Jobs fear at News

JOURNALISTS and printers at the Scarborough Evening News fear jobs could be lost after bosses revealed plans to print the paper outside the county.

Staff understand the paper's owners, Johnston Press, are considering printing the Evening News at the company's presses as far afield as Leeds, Sunderland or Sheffield.

One source said there were concerns that the jobs of some journalists and printers could be under threat.

The company was due to reveal full details of its plans - and launch a month-long consultation - tomorrow.

Dave Barry, the National Union of Journalists' leader at the Evening News, said: "We are keeping quiet until we see what the company says on Thursday. They will give us details of what is happening, and we will have a much clearer picture then."

The paper's editor, Ed Asquith, said he was not able to comment.
