Hotel adds room with a view

THE owners of a private country house hotel have invested £60,000 to extend the premises for its growing number of guests.

A conservatory has been built at the Wrea Head Hotel in Scalby, where visitors can enjoy views across the village and as far afield as Scarborough.

Wrea Head is one of several properties in the county owned by the family-run English Rose Hotels, which is carrying out a programme of expansion and development.

The new conservatory, which has been designed to complement the country house feel of Wrea Head, connects from the bar to the gardens making it an added attraction for both holidaymakers and business delegates. Glynn Dalby, English Rose Hotels' commercial director, said the new facility had been designed for use all year round and was already proving popular.

"The feedback we've had from guests so far has been extremely positive," he said. "The views in spring and summer will be fantastic, but as it's heated, it also provides people with another area where they can relax during the colder months."

The 20-bedroom hotel is set in acres of wooded and landscaped gardens on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and is a popular venue for guests celebrating special occasions. It is licensed for civil wedding ceremonies and Glynn expects the conservatory will also appeal to couples planning to tie the knot.

"You have to plan for all eventualities when you're organising a wedding and if the worst happens and the weather lets you down, guests can still use the conservatory and enjoy views of the gardens and village without feeling that they've been shut indoors all day," he explained.

As part of its ongoing investment programme, English Rose Hotels has recently completed extensive refurbishment at the both the Royal and Clifton hotels in nearby Scarborough.

The four-star Royal Hotel has received a £3 million facelift while £400,000 has been spent on upgrading the bedrooms at the Clifton.
