Honours for army officer and county police chief

A 42-YEAR military career has been crowned with an OBE for a retired Malton army officer.

Col George Gadd received the award in the New Year's Honours for his services to ex-servicemen and women who served in the Korean War.

For the past 10 years, he has been chairman of the British Korean Veterans' Association (BKVA) and moved to Malton 18 months ago, living at Colling Wood Gardens.

Col Gadd, 72, served in many parts of the world during his career.

He was just 19 when he became involved in the Korean War in 1953, while being based with the King's Regiment in Liverpool - one of the youngest soldiers to see action.

He left the hostilities with the rank of sergeant.

His career also saw him in service in Germany, Northern Ireland, Hong Kong and the former Rhodesia where he was chief pay master with the UK Land Forces.

The BKVA has some 4,700 members in 59 branches nationwide, said Col Gadd.

His last post was as pay master at Imphal Barracks, York, from which he retired 12 years ago.

Meanwhile, North Yorkshire's Chief Constable, Della Cannings, spoke of her pride after she was awarded the Queen's Police Medal.

The honour rewards 30 years of police service in Devon and Cleveland, her research in the USA, and work as chief constable over the last three years.

She said: "I receive this award with enormous pride, not just for myself but for all those police officers and police staff who work every day to do their best for our communities.

"Policing is a wonderful career, offering a variety and complexity of working, which is boundlessly challenging - one of the challenges being that however well the police do, the public always expect even more!"
