Young farmers' clubs

Kirkbymoorside: On September 10, it was the harvest dance held at Westfield Farm, Cropton.

Everyone had a good night. Thanks to all members who helped to set up, the few who cleaned up the morning after, and to Alison, Annabel, Andrea and Rachel who looked after the barbeque.

Also, thanks go to Mr and Mrs Wood for allowing the use of their shed as the venue.

The first meeting of the winter programme was a business meeting on September 14.

On September 21, members enjoyed a visit to the maize maze at Hagg Farm, Thornton Road, Pickering. James Dowkes gave the vote of thanks.

Ryedale

Helmsley farmers banded together at a barbecue which raised money for those affected by the June flooding with an impressive turnout of about 100 people.

Jonathon Fairburn hosted the event at his property, Griff Farm in Helmsley, with the help of staff from the National Farmers Union.

More than £1,000 collected from the event was donated to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Organisers hoped the funds would indirectly reach farmers who suffered flood damage through support handed out by RABI.

The barbecue, in July, was accompanied by a disco while a raffle was drawn with prizes donated by local businesses.

The cheery crowd doubled the attendance of a similar event organised by NFU two years ago.

Darren Felgate, NFU assistant group secretary, said a good time was had by all.

"It was mainly intended to be a social event with the added extra of raising money for good causes," he said.
