Yorkshire is top of the north

Yorkshire's young farmers have shown their famous 'Yorkshire grit' once again, by winning the Northern Area Competitions' Day.

Competitors from the Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers battled it out with young people from seven areas in the north of England including Durham, Lancashire and Cumbria for the coveted prize.

Competitions ranged from stock judging and cookery to aerobics and bricklaying - not forgetting the popular tug of war competition. Several of the winners will go through to the national finals at the Royal Show on July 4.

Peter Gratton, chairman of Yorkshire's Activities Committee, said: "We're delighted that our members have done so well.

"To win Northern Area Competitions' Day is a real achievement, especially as the county also won the Northern Area Public Speaking Competition in March. I'd like to thank Durham YFC for hosting the event and wish all our competitors the best of luck at the national finals."

The Yorkshire contingent won the overall competition by eight points, beating Lancashire into second place and Cumbria into third.
