Flash floods cause chaos

FLASH floods have devastated parts of Ryedale, turning streets into raging torrents within minutes during a severe storm.

The town of Helmsley and Hawnby village were amongst the worst-hit on Sunday evening.

In Helmsley, up to 20 properties were inundated and the town's main bridge was completely submerged after the River Rye burst its banks, initially sparking fears it had collapsed.

Hundreds of livestock are also feared to have been swept away.

The Gazette & Herald will have the full story and pictures in Wednesday's paper.

If you have a story to tell about the dramatic events or have taken any photographs, we would like to hear from you.

Please ring our reporter Claire Metcalfe in our Malton office on (01653) 695600 or email your stories and pictures to gazette@ycp.co.uk.
