Firefighters cooking up a little romance

Romance is alive and well in Helmsley thanks to Lady Feversham, who taught nine firefighters to cook a special dinner for the women in their lives on Valentine's Day.

She taught them at Duncombe Park to create menu of whisky seared salmon with lime creme fraiche, followed by steak in Marsala and rounded off with vanilla ice cream with Griottes, the recipes for which appeared in last week's Gazette & Herald.

"She was absolutely brilliant and made the cooking look very simple," said Ian Pattison, officer in charge at Helmsley fire station. "Game on Lady Feversham!"

And the verdict? Janet Hutchinson, who runs Waine's Coal Merchants with her partner David Waine, one of the firefighters, said: "It was very nice, he did a good job and I was quite shocked! The fillet steak was particularly good."

Lady Feversham said: "Hopefully it fanned the flames of passion and the firefighters were all good students.

''I think with the advent of Jamie Oliver, men are getting more interested in cooking.

''And of course health and fitness - particularly for firefighters - is an becoming more of an issue."

She added: "We are extremely grateful to Jacquie from Pern's, not only in providing food at cost price but packaging it up to make life easier for the men."
