Ryedale people give generous support

THE GENEROSITY of Ryedale residents has swelled the disaster appeal.

They dug deep into their pockets over the festive period to add thousands of pounds to the money already donated.

The Blacksmith's Arms, at Lastingham, raised £750 when staff and friends donated some 20 prizes, and the pub landlady Hilary Trafford provided prizes of £100 worth of meals.

Regulars at The Dawnay Arms, Heslerton, collected at least £100.

There are on-going collections at The Buck Inn, Wrelton, The Union Inn, Commercial Street, Norton and King's Head Hotel, Kirkbymoorside.

A collection on New Year's Eve at the Jolly Farmer's, Leavening, raised £400.

Collecting boxes on the bars at The Horshoe, Pickering, have still to be counted up but were said to be "all pretty full".

At The Crown Hotel, Helmsley, staff donated their New Year's Eve tips from the restaurant and with donations from guests more than £100 was raised.

The Star Inn, Harome, had an auction and roulette at its New Year's Eve party and raised £300.

Regulars at The Sun Inn, Normanby, collected £53.

Another New Year's Eve collection raised £170 at The Highwayman, Sheriff Hutton. Tomorrow the village will hold a coffee morning from 10am to noon at The Old School House, run by the churches in the village. It then continues from 1pm to 3.30pm.

Collections have also been made at The Golden Lion, Great Barugh, and Middleton Arms, Middleton.

Landlord Graham Moore of The Bay Horse, Burythorpe, organised a football match among the regulars and people "contributed very generously".

At the Derwent Arms, Norton, "substantial" donations were made from festive drinkers in collecting buckets and father and son landlords John and Darren Rushworth gave five per cent of the Sunday takings.
