ALMOST 70 riders took part in a training ride in Dalby Forest on Sunday, June 27, organised by the North and East Yorkshire Group of Endurance GB.
They set off from the venue at Jingelby Thorn Farm, in the heart of the forest for a ride that is almost 100pc forest tracks and open moorland, with only half a mile of roadwork. Two routes were available, one of 13 miles and one of 18 miles and the split was almost equal, with half choosing each route.
Dalby Forest is a fairly tough course, which makes it an excellent training ride as well as thoroughly enjoyable with superb views. There are plenty of hills, narrow woodland tracks and a water crossing and, for the first time, a more unusual hazard to negotiate - four alpacas! Rain the previous day had made the going almost perfect. The course was well marked and well stewarded, with four checkpoints and Raynet communication. All the riders finished within the time and without mishap.
A spokesperson for the group said it was encouraging to see a number of young riders taking part, riding alongside their parents. There were also many riders who were experiencing long-distance riding for the first time who obviously enjoyed the day.
The next ride the group being organised is at Dialstone, near Sutton Bank on August 1, followed by a ride at Thimbleby, on August 15. For details of these or any other rides contact Sarah Martin on (01609) 882546.
RYEDALE Bridleways Group members are to hear all about long-distance trail riding at their next meeting, on Tuesday, July 6.
Committee member Anne Blakemore, who has ridden trails in many parts of the UK, will tell of her adventures. Members are also to discuss the North Yorkshire rights of way improvement plan and how horse riders can have a say in it.
All are welcome to the meeting, which is at Sinnington Village Hall, at7.30pm.
