GREG Beattie became the Yorkshire Post Sporting Chance Youth League champion last Sunday in the under-14 sabre category - beating his brother, Ben, by just one point.
The pair, who come from Thixendale, near Malton, met in the final of the third meeting of three at Sheffield, with 12-year-old Greg pipping 14-year-old Ben 15-13. His victory put him one point clear of Ben in the overall standings, each brother having gained wins at previous meetings in Hull and Harrogate.
After his win in the final, in which the lead changed hands several times, Greg said: "I'm ecstatic and very relieved that I won after the three competitions. I've mixed feelings about beating Ben as we are good friends."
He was thankful to Ben for beating tough opponent James Gleadhall 15-11, in the semi-final, after Gleadhall had earlier beaten Greg in the pool matches.
The brothers are in action next month in a team event for the Pocklington-based Ridings Sabre Club.
